The Questions of Zarathrustra

This I ask Thee, tell me truly, O Lord:

Who was the father and begetter of Righteousness at the beginning?

Who established the course of the sun and stars?

Through whom does the moon wax and wane?

These things, O Wise One, Ahura Mazda, and others, I wish to know.

This I ask Thee, tell me truly, O Lord:

Who is it that upheld the earth from below, and the heavens from falling?

Who created the waters and the plants?

Who yoked swiftness to the winds and the clouds?

Who, O Wise One, is the creator of the Good Mind?

This I ask Thee, tell me truly, O Lord:

What craftsman created light and darkness?

What craftsman created sleep and wakefulness?

Through whom exists the morning, the noon, and the night,

That remind the wise man of his duty?

This I ask Thee, tell me truly, O Lord:

Who created revered Devotion, together with Power?

Who, through his wisdom, made the son reverent to the father?

I strive to comprehend thee through these questions, O Wise One,

As the Bountiful Spirit and creator of all things.

This I ask Thee, tell me truly, O Lord:

I ask, how may I perfect my vision of Thee,

To have my words of instruction fulfilled according to Righteousness?

May my voice be effective so that I may convert all the living

To the path of Truth.
